Supporting Families and Children in the Wake of Wildfires

January 17th, 2025 by Kim Wishon

Supporting the Waldorf students, families, and faculty impacted by the LA firesAs we settle into the new year at Wishing Well, the energy on campus is vibrant. Students are reconnecting with friends, teachers are marveling at the growth that can happen over a short break, and our community is finding its rhythm once again. Yet, as we reflect on this promising start, our hearts are heavy for those impacted by the recent devastating wildfires in Los Angeles.

Standing Together as a Community

The recent fires were tragic, affecting countless families and communities, including our fellow Waldorf schools in Pasadena and Westside. These schools suffered immense losses, and as a Waldorf community, we deeply feel their pain. In times like these, the strength of community and the spirit of generosity shine brightest.

At Wishing Well, we have reached out through AWSNA (the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America) to offer support. From classroom spaces to rooms in our homes, we’re ready to help families displaced by these fires. If you’re aware of any needs or ways we can assist further, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Together, we can be a beacon of hope for those facing incredible challenges.

Helping Children Process Difficult Events

For families navigating conversations about wildfires and loss, we’ve gathered a selection of resources to help support your children’s emotional well-being. These tools can provide a gentle and age-appropriate way to address their feelings and worries.

  • Trinka & Sam: The Big Fire: This free children’s book, available in multiple languages, is a wonderful resource for discussing wildfires. Created by Piplo Productions and the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, it offers a comforting story to help children process their emotions.
  • PBS SoCal’s Guide: The resource How to Talk to Kids About Wildfires provides insightful tips for addressing this topic with sensitivity and care.
  • LAist Article: If you’re unsure how to approach conversations about losing a home or the broader impact of wildfires, this short, thoughtful article offers practical advice and empathy.
  • Additional Support: For those seeking further insights, this guide offers similar information to help parents and caregivers navigate these discussions effectively.
  • Donate. Donate to the Waldorf schools affected by the fires here (Westside Waldorf School) and here (Pasadena Waldorf School).

Looking Ahead with Care

As we honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy this weekend, let us also reflect on the values of compassion and community that he embodied. May we carry those ideals forward, supporting one another through challenges and celebrating the resilience of our children and families.

Thank you for being part of this wonderful community. Together, we can continue to grow, thrive, and extend a helping hand when it’s needed most.
